Breaking News: African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) grant “Affiliate Status” to South Sudan Human Rights Commission (SSHRC) in its 63rd Ordinary Session of the ACHPR 28 Oct. 2018, Banjul, the Gambia
……………………………..
What does it means and requirements to have affiliate status?
An Affiliate status is accreditation of the national human rights institution by the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights to fully discharge its mandate at the country level and regularly present country’s human rights report to the African Commission every two years.

The granting of affiliate status to national human rights institutions (NHRIs is one of the most vigorous process I have ever seen. The Resolution on the Granting of Affiliate Status to National Human Rights Institutions and other specialized human rights institutions in Africa, adopted by the African Commission during its 60th Ordinary Session, held in Niamey, Niger, in May 2017 read together with rule 67 (1) of the Rules of Procedure of the African Commission, provides in summary that applicant institution must have proper track records of institutional independence; must have operational capabilities including broad mandate of promotion, protection and monitoring of human rights situation through various means; and employed peoples of proven character, impartial, diversity and possesses necessary academic qualifications, skills and experiences and finally that human rights institution must be accessible to the general public addressing their issues.

After careful study of the application for affiliate status submitted by South Sudan human Rights Commission to the African commission three months ago, the file was examined and critique by Honorable Commissioner Justice Yeung Kam John Yeung, Chief Justice of the Republic of Mauritius together with the help of the secretariat.

Today was the hour that the African Commission under able leadership of Her Excellency Soyata Maiga, Chairperson of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and after having heard the presentation from Honorable Commissioner in charge of the file, Justice Yeung Kam and after having no objection raised by any person during the proceedings, the chairperson declare at 3:42 pm which is 6: 42 pm back home in Juba, South Sudan that South Sudan Human Rights Commission is granted affiliate status with effect from 28 October 2018.

The Chairperson congratulates South Sudan Human Rights Commission and welcome us to the club of the African National Human Rights Institutions that are dedicated to a just cause and champion of human rights in Africa and beyond. We were equally reminded of our duties and responsibilities as human rights commission and South Sudan political leadership as a whole to abide by our constitutional obligation with respect to human rights. God bless us

Adv. Beny Gideon Mabor
Commissioner
