In the advent of the much feared elections in Kenya, we at AFTABOSS Internet’ional hereby inform our blogger community in particular and South Sudanese communities in general, that we have just launched a community safety updates centre called ‘ASSK 4 Info Centre’ in Nairobi.

ASSK Stands for ‘Awareness for South Sudanese in Kenya’. This will be jointly managed by Jon Pen (Ana Taban East Africa Chapter), Rebecca Yom of Achut Foundation/PECOSS and Zoom-Pakeer on AFTABOSS Intntnl desk.

The #ASSK4UnI Updates social media centre will relay complaints from the South Sudanese community in Kenya to the relevant authorities and also post updates about instructions and safety guidelines to the communities.

For the last two weeks, members went to churches and community functions distributing elections safety guidelines and hotlines to the communities. This elections week, it will be social media engagement.

ASSK 4 INFO CONCEPT NOTES

ASSK INFO CENTRE

AWARENESS FOR SOUTH SUDANESE IN KENYA

(ASSK for Updates and Information)

#Assk4UnI

Awareness for South Sudanese in Kenya (ASSK Info & Updates) Centre came up as an emergency response to the South Sudanese community needs for credible and authentic updates and information for their safety.
The information centre was put up to help guide and guard both the refugees and urban residents of South Sudanese origin in Kenya.

The ASSK (Social Media) info hub is set up by South Sudanese activists from AFTABOSS Internet’ional (Association of Facebookers, Tweeters and Bloggers of South Sudan), Anataban (EA Chapter), and Pecoss (Peace Coalition of South Sudan).

The centre will run through the electioneering seasons, as well as serve the community with other vital communal needs for information in Kenya.
The #Assk4U&I Campaign, which stands for ‘Ask for Updates and Information’, was launched on August 4, 2017 to allay the election-related fears and counter the hate and xenophobic campaign against South Sudanese with correct information with authentic updates from the events around and messages of peaceful co-existence between the South Sudanese and their host communities.

#Assk4U&I is a two-way community communication system. The Centre will post updates from the ongoing events around the country and individuals from the community will post their inquiries (need for information) to the ASSK Social Media Centre.

The Centre is connected with relevant information authorities including the UNHCR Protection Hotline and other civil society and human rights activists’ contacts.

Just less than a week to the elections day (08/08/2017) in Kenya, Kenyans on social media initiated a hate campaign against innocent South Sudanese refugees, asylum seekers and other residents in the country. The purported reason for launching this mainly Twitter-based campaign under the hashtag #DeportSouthSudanese is attributed to the 4 Kenyan nationals who have been sentenced on their own individual crimes, together with their South Sudanese partners, to serve long jail terms in Juba by the Government of South Sudan. It has nothing to do with the ordinary citizens of South Sudan both inside and outside of the Republic of South Sudan.

OBJECTIVES OF ASSK SOCIAL MEDIA INFO HUB

To give South Sudanese residents in Kenya authentic and real time updates (for safety) about elections and other events of their concern.

To receive and channel the concerns of South Sudanese citizens in Kenya to relevant authorities for necessary actions.

To guide and guard the rights to information (freedom of expression and association) for South Sudanese citizens and communities in Kenya.

To liaise South Sudanese communities (organizations and individuals) with the relevant authorities for necessary actions.
